Indoor Swimming Pool Bern 2018 Public Building City of Bern Bern, Switzerland Competition, 6th Prize
Markus Schietsch, Christian Sünnen

Bern’s new indoor pool is designed as a light, open hall with floor-to-ceiling glazing which is spanned by a slender supporting grid of metal beams. The various pools are arranged compactly with circulation along the outer facade. The hall is structured by a central gallery with lift cores and staircases. Due to the elevated position of the indoor pool, visitors view over the surrounding sports fields and are visually connected to them, while at the same time being visually protected by the surrounding trees.

With its lofty steel columns, the facade has been conceived as a filigree filter, open and glazed on all sides, that connects the pool with the surrounding greenery. This transparency allows sufficient light to enter the interior and connects the swimming pool with the landscape. While connecting the interior to the exterior, the external supporting structure, despite its openness, also creates a protected atmosphere.
